Even before the Sisters of Life existed, a retreat house was envisioned for the community. A devoted laborer in the pro-life vineyard, John Cardinal O'Connor knew the need for a place of refuge for the many people who faithfully engage in the spiritual battle on behalf of human life. He knew of the need for a central location where people could come with confidence to be educated on the life issues for the sake of their own human development. He knew of the thirsting need of so many to "come out of the rain," into a spiritual sanctuary and a place of refreshment, encouragement and fellowship, to experience the "Culture of Life," alive and well. During the last two years, thanks to the generosity and vision of the Knights of Columbus under Supreme Knight Carl Anderson and the support of Bishop William E. Lori, Bishop of Bridgeport, Connecticut, that vision became a reality. On October 20, 2004, Villa Maria Guadalupe officially opened its doors and beginning in Spring 2005, retreats for the general public commenced.

Villa Maria Guadalupe
Mission Statement
Villa Maria Guadalupe is an
international retreat center of the Knights of Columbus operated by the
Sisters of Life, an active-contemplative Religious Institute dedicated
to promoting and enhancing the sacredness of all human life.
The Sisters of Life will offer retreats, educational opportunities,
seminars and weekend programs for young people, married couples,
families, priests and religious. Drawing from the liturgy and teachings
of the Catholic Church, retreats will be centered on the Eucharist. The
rest, quiet and prayer at Villa Maria will strengthen retreatants,
deepen their spiritual lives and help them to be "people of life and
for life" more fully.
The establishment of Villa Maria Guadalupe as a spiritual home for the
pro-life community is a response to Pope John Paul II's call for a
"great campaign in support of life" in his encyclical, Evangelium
Vitae. It will be a lasting tribute to the Holy Father's dedication to
the Gospel of Life.
A sanctuary of renewal, hope and mercy under the protection of the
Blessed Mother, Villa Maria Guadalupe promises to play a unique and
integral role as the spiritual foundation of the Culture of Life.
| "The
process of formation and development in the religious life has to be
the process of the clay in the hands of the potter, the Divine Potter,
Who shapes us uniquely to be filled with His Son, and yet each of us in
a different way... If God wanted every religious to be exactly alike,
then God would have created every human being exactly alike."
- John Cardinal O'Connor
